Top-performing logistics services providers are going beyond basic IT systems by investing in highly integrated systems across internal and external supply chains. A global survey, conducted in 1998–99 by McKinsey in conjunction with a German university, revealed that LSPs need to boost their investment in IT systems that deliver high-quality data. Investments in order- and vehicle-management systems pay off especially well.

Sophisticated, customer-friendly IT systems will help LSPs convince shippers to outsource more of their logistics, including warehousing, to service providers.
