Biopharma's capacity crunch

The challenging part of biotechnology always seemed to be the creation of promising new biopharmaceuticals. Yet the industry may soon be losing revenues because of a more prosaic concern—insufficient manufacturing capacity to meet demand as new drugs come to market.

The take-away
Even at a cost of $250 million to $500 million for each of the industry's manufacturing plants, continued expansion is crucial. It won't come easily, however: the highly trained people needed to design, build, and operate them are also in short supply.
